After the success of negotiations between UFC and Conor McGregor, the Irishman's duel against Floyd Mayweather is now negotiated between the fighters. And, if it depends on an executive linked to the North American, the superfight could take place in 2017. Stephen Espinoza, vice president of Showtime Sports, which has a contract to sell Mayweather's fights on pay-per-view, seems optimistic about the carrying out combat.

In an interview with the North American website “FightHype”, Espinoza explained that the most difficult part of the negotiations was actually releasing Ultimate so that Conor could fight. Now, the UFC and McGregor will negotiate directly with Floyd Mayweather and the date of the superfight depends only on how long it will take for the parties to reach an agreement.

“I think the date really depends on how long it will take to reach an agreement. The reality is that it took a long time for UFC and Conor to reach an agreement and, now, the real negotiation begins with Floyd's side against the UFC/McGregor duo. If it takes too little, the fight will probably take place in 2017. But if it drags on too long, then it won't happen until the beginning of next year. However, if people are as motivated as they seem to be – and I know how much Floyd wants this – we could see it in early autumn (spring in Brazil). That's the goal. That's what we heard from Floyd. Now just enter the room and see if people will be reasonable about the type of business they are looking for”, commented the executive.

The agreement between UFC and Conor McGregor It took a while to be finalized, as Ultimate has exclusivity regarding the Irishman's career. This means that “The Notorious” cannot fight anywhere without permission from Dana White and company. Thus, it is speculated that McGregor promised a portion of his winnings against Mayweather so that the UFC could release him.
