USADA announced, this Friday (5), that former UFC fighter Ricardo “Demente” Abreu was suspended for four years for failing a second anti-doping test. The Brazilian was already serving a suspension when he was caught again in December last year, with traces of nandrolone, a banned steroid, in his blood.

Even though he had already announced his retirement from MMA, the former jiu-jitsu champion was punished again. However, his suspension will only come into effect once “Demente” notifies USADA that he intends to return to MMA. This means that he will have to notify the organization if he wants to fight professionally again and wait four years before returning to the octagon. He would be tested normally during this period.

Upon being notified of the new failure, “Demente” revealed, in an interview with the Combate channel website, that he was suffering from depression and using medications that caused him to be caught in the anti-doping test. In addition to shining in the gentle art, the Brazilian even fought on TUF Brasil 3, reaching the semifinals, where he lost to Márcio Lyoto. In the UFC, he had a victory, over Wagnão Silva, and a defeat, against Jake collier. He retired with a record of five triumphs and just one setback.
