It was not just the Ceará public that showed support for Vitor belfort after the defeat to Kelvin Gastelum in the main fight of UFC Fortaleza, last Saturday (11). The fighter's wife, Joana Prado, also made a point of paying tribute to her husband and made it clear that she supports the Phenom's decision to retire after the next fight, the last of his current contract with Ultimate.

Through her official Instagram, Joana wrote a long text highlighting Belfort's qualities outside of MMA and declared that the bars of the octagon “were too small” for the fighter's dreams, who completed 20 years of Ultimate in February this year – his debut was on February 7, 1997, when he became heavyweight GP champion at UFC 12.

“If your 21 years of history have given you the courage to face defeats, the recent past has given you victories. Yesterday was just another fight and, wrongly, we all wanted a magic eraser that would erase this recent past. He apologized yesterday, showing that behind and beyond the Phenomenon there is a human being and once again, surpassing himself, or rather, surpassing us. Vitor belfort, the octagon is too small for you. I believe the time has come to continue fighting for what you have always believed in. Share and explore your talents, after all, your octagon never had bars. I am very proud of you, because we recognize a true champion for his personal life and not for his public one. I love you”, posted Joana.

The setback for Gastelum was the third in a row for Belfort, who had already been defeated by Ronaldo Jacare e Gegard Mousasi last year. After the fight, he admitted that his body is no longer the same and declared that he has one last fight in his current UFC contract. He asked for it to take place in his hometown, Rio de Janeiro, which will host UFC 212 on June 3rd.
