Former dominant welterweight champion (up to 77kg), Georges St Pierre, at his peak, always saw his name speculated in a possible superfight against Anderson Silva, at the time champion of the upper middleweight category (up to 84kg). However, according to the Canadian himself, the confrontation between the two never got off the ground because it was only offered, in fact, when he had already chosen to take a break from MMA. Now, back in the Octagon, GSP believes the fight could happen.

“It is possible (the superfight against Anderson Silva). In fact, the only time I was offered a fight against Anderson, a real offer I mean, was after the fight against (Johny) Hendricks, at UFC 167, when I decided to step away from fighting. I didn’t say “no” to this fight against Anderson Silva because I didn't want to fight him. I didn't want to fight anyone. If I were asked to fight a dwarf or a giant, I would certainly refuse to fight. I just wanted to rest and not fight anymore”, explained the Canadian.

St-Pierre, who will make his return against Michael Bisping in the second half of this year, in a duel valid for the UFC middleweight belt, highlights that the circumstances for a superfight with Spider, when both still reigned in their categories, were more complicated for the company.

– I spoke with (former UFC owner) Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White several times about Anderson. There was a huge list of rivals in my division and, if I had to fight him, I would first have to fight at catchweight because I would have to defend my belt later. And I wanted to do the fight with anti-doping tests from WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency), because I would like this type of test and they didn't yet have an agreement with USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency). I believe the UFC didn't like my idea at the time, but then I had to fight a lot of people, I injured my ligaments and there were people waiting to fight me. There was no way I could think about fighting Anderson”, concluded the Canadian.
