Demian Maia intended to await the winner of the welterweight title fight between the champion Tyron woodley and the challenger Stephen Thompson. However, UFC president Dana White revealed that he wants to put the Brazilian in a duel against Nick Diaz. The idea is that the winner of this fight will be eligible to compete for the category belt. If the North American does not accept, it is possible that Demian will be selected to face Jorge masvidal, who knocked out Donald Cerrone at UFC Denver last Saturday (28).
“I just reached out (to Diaz’s team) and asked? What do you think about a fight with Demian Maia? I haven't heard any response from them yet. If Nick doesn’t accept, I’ll give the fight to (Jorge) Masvidal”, explained Dana in an interview with the official Ultimate podcast “UFC Unfiltered”.
Demian Maia comes from a streak of six consecutive victories at welterweight, and would be the next to fight for the belt after the first fight between Woodley and Thompson. However, the draw resulted in a rematch between the two, which will be held at UFC 209, on March 4. The Brazilian's last fight was in August last year, when he submitted the former interim champion Carlos Condit with a rear naked choke in the first round.
