Former Strikeforce lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez came close to repeating the feat in the UFC on two occasions. But after defeats to the champions Ben henderson e Anthony Pettis, the North American ended up getting lost in the division. Seeking the Ultimate title, he decided to move down to featherweight. However, approval still remains for the event, which has not yet offered him any fights up to 66 kg.

“Until I get a featherweight fight, I can't really confirm that. But yes, that is my current goal (to lose weight). I'm trying to lose weight. I'm going on a diet and losing some more belly fat to maximize my body's potential. When I reach this point, which I should reach in the next few weeks, I will really be able to make that change and make that decision. That's my goal, to hit 66 kilos. That's what I'm working on at the moment. I want one last run for the belt,” Melendez, 34, commented to MMA Junkie Radio.

Despite being signed at a premium, the North American, champion of smaller events such as the WEC, did not live up to expectations. His only victory in Ultimate was against Diego Sánchez, in 2013. After a setback against Eddie Alvarez, in 2015, he was caught in an anti-doping test and suspended for a year. Upon his return to competition, he lost to Edson Barboza, and now he is trying to reinvent himself among the featherweights.
