After returning to the Octagon, being knocked out by Yair Rodriguez in the main fight of UFC Phoenix, held last Sunday (15), the future of B.J. Penn in MMA it became an unknown. However, if it depended on Frankie Edgar, who has already defeated the Hawaiian on three occasions, the former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion should hang up his gloves.

“It’s not my role to say when someone should retire. This is something you might want to do. Personally, I would like to see BJ retire. This is not the BJ we fell in love with. His fighting style, the type of person he is and how he brings it, you could say he's kind of a shell of himself. The lord of time is invincible and that's how it works. (…) The warrior is still there, the spirit is still there. It’s just his body that wasn’t responding,” said the featherweight, in an interview with the website ‘TMZ’ (USA).

Edgar also revealed that he was bothered by Penn's latest defeat, which hasn't won since 2010 (four defeats and a draw). For him, the referee could have prevented BJ from receiving some 'unnecessary' blows.

“BJ is a fighter. He has the heart of a fighter. (…) But when Yair was on top of him, beating him to the end, I was shouting at the TV: 'Stop the fight, that's enough'. I think they probably could have stopped that fight a little sooner. Maybe if it had been another guy I would have handled it better. (…) So perhaps he would have been spared a few more punches to the face,” he concluded.
