It is not today that the name of Jon Jones has been talked about more for the controversies in which the fighter is involved than for the talent he possesses inside the Octagon. This time, however, it was Jones himself who made a “heavy” revelation about his career.

According to the former light heavyweight champion, he had the habit of 'drinking until he blacked out' before his fights. For Jones, the custom served as a 'psychological crutch'.

“I did this crazy thing of going out to parties a week before every fight. And I've done that throughout my career. It was stupid, but it was a mental crutch of mine. (…) I would go out, a week before every fight, and literally drink until I blacked out. And my logic was: if this guy beats me somehow, I can look in the mirror and say I lost because I got drunk a week before the fight”, admitted Jones, in an interview with the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast.

Jones also revealed that the period he most “got out of control” was in preparation for the duel against Alexander Gustafson, precisely the opponent that gave the North American the most trouble. “I trained for the fight, but I definitely had this thing about feeling invincible. And I did a lot of crazy things on the way to that fight. I definitely didn't give my all. I really went to parties, drank and stayed up all night,” concluded the fighter.

Jon Jones received a one-year suspension after being caught in a surprise drug test shortly before his fight at UFC 200, in July. The punishment was applied to Jones retroactively, referring to the date on which his exam results were announced. Thus, the interim light heavyweight champion will be fully cleared to fight again in July 2017.
