Conor McGregor received a lot of criticism from fighters after the UFC announced that he will fight for the lightweight belt (70kg) against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205, on November 12, in New York, even though he holds the featherweight title (66kg). However, there are those who defend the Irish, as is the case of Anthony Pettis.

Former champion of the under-70kg division, and now playing at featherweight, Pettis stated that he sees nothing wrong with Conor's decision. He even recalled that he already tried to do the same, but was unsuccessful.

“I was trying to do that when I was champion. I called José Aldo right after I won the lightweight belt, and that was supposed to happen, but it didn't happen for a few reasons. And now I think Conor is doing his part. He's a guy who's winning his fights, he's beating his opponents, he's fighting guys like Nate diaz, but he is winning the fights, what can you say? He’s selling the tickets, he’s selling the fights, he’s winning the fights and people want to see him fight.” Pettis said on 'UFC Tonight' (USA).

“I wanted to do it, so I can't say he shouldn't be able to do it. When I won the belt, the first thing I said was 'Jose aldo We have unfinished business.' That was my plan when I was the champion”, he added.
