On that occasion, Nelson attacked McCarthy for allegedly taking too long to stop the fight against Antonio Pezão, won by knockout by the North American. Nelson, a personal friend of Pezão, felt uncomfortable with the fact that he had to give the Brazilian more blows, and, therefore, protested against the referee with obscene gestures and insults.

The incidents were reported in the official fight summary, and, according to the North American website “MMA Fighting”, Nelson will be judged by the entity, created at the beginning of the year by CABMMA (Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission).

UFC president Dana White considered Nelson's attitude “inexcusable, disgusting and despicable”. However, the director stated that he will not take any action in the matter, and that the appropriate punishments must be applied by CABMMA.
