The summary states that “Roy Nelson kicked Big John and made an obscene gesture towards the referee after the fight ended.” At the post-fight press conference, Nelson justified his attitude because he was irritated by Big John's eventual delay in interrupting the duel.

“It was a push. It was more like, 'What's up?!' We talked in the octagon, I was like, 'Man, he was knocked out,' and he was like, 'No, he wasn't,' and I was like, 'Man, I know what a knockout is, I knock people out for a living, it's the what I do.' Just because he didn't roll his eyes or tremble doesn't mean he isn't. (…) I didn’t want to hurt Pezão any more than necessary. I got caught up in the moment because it was like I was beating someone up, and I thought, 'Man, I've done it!' This hurt my feelings. I apologized to Big John, but I wouldn't take it back. It hurt me to have to keep hitting a guy who no longer needed to be hit”, said Roy.

It is important to remember that the UFC itself has already fired a fighter for a similar act. Two years ago, American Jason High pushed referee Kevin Mulhall after being knocked out by the Brazilian Rafael dos Anjos. At the time, Dana White, president of Ultimate, judged the attitude as “inadmissible” and fired the athlete. In Nelson's case, however, White has not yet commented.
