UFC welterweight champion, Georges St-Pierre, already has a set date and opponent for his next belt defense. On October 29th, the Canadian will be in action at UFC 137 when he faces the North American Nick Diaz, current holder of the Strikeforce welterweight belt. The confrontation will mark the first “superfight” between champions of both events after the Ultimate buy its main competitor in March this year.

This will be the seventh consecutive opportunity in which St-Pierre will challenge the title he won in 2008. After “cleaning up” his division in the UFC, the Canadian is left to try to expand his dominance at welterweight against the main name in the category in the sister organization. In his most recent fight, St-Pierre overcame the American Jake Shields, by unanimous decision of the judges, in a fight valid for UFC 129, held in April this year.

Diaz has an unbeaten record of ten fights in his career. Before being confirmed as St-Pierre's new challenger, the American considered returning to boxing fights, but rumors of his possible return to the noble art led UFC president, Dana White, to grant him the title-shot fearing possible injuries and damage to their image. The first welterweight champion in Strikeforce history, Diaz is coming off a knockout victory over Englishman Paul Daley in the Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley, held last April.

UFC 137 will be based in the city of Las Vegas and, so far, only has the fight between St-Pierre and Diaz confirmed on its card. Stay tuned here at SUPER FIGHTS to have all the information on the subject.
