Current UFC lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez's future is unknown, but one path has been widely speculated as the North American's next step: a duel against Conor McGregor, holder of the featherweight belt. When commenting on the matter, the fighter made a somewhat curious analogy to explain what would happen if he were to face the Irishman.

“If this fight really goes through and happens, I feel like I will show the whole world that there is no Santa Claus. And everyone will be disappointed. There is no Santa Claus. He does not exist. It was a lie and I'm going to steal everyone's magic. The magic is over. And I can't wait. It will be a great moment for me”, he told the website 'MMA Fighting' (USA).

Alvarez was also dismissive of Conor's qualities, saying that the loudmouth would not be a match for any of the athletes at the gym where he trains. “In a training room, there's always one guy we call 'rest round.' And he (McGregor) is the rest round. He's the guy you pick up when you're super tired and say, 'Hey man, come on, let's do a round. And not just for me, it's for everyone. For Frankie (Edgar), Edson (Barboza), Marlon (Moraes). For any of us”, bracing his teammates.

Despite the rumors, Eddie stated that he doesn't believe this fight will get off the ground. According to him, McGregor is smart enough not to want to face him, as he knows he will put his image and reputation at risk if this fight takes place.

“Where we're different is that I'm a guy who cares about reality and he cares about perception. The MMA game is changing because the show has come before the sport. And as a result, perception ends up having greater importance than it should. That's why I don't think they'll want this fight. If perception is the most important thing, you don't go after the best guy, you don't come fight me. You go after the guy who seems to be the best, but isn't”, analyzed the champion.

Eddie Alvarez won the lightweight belt with a knockout Rafael dos Anjos last July at UFC Fight Night 90, in his fourth fight in the UFC. At 32 years old, he has a record of 28 wins and just 4 losses. Alvarez was also the lightweight champion of Bellator, considered the second largest MMA organization in the world.
