“MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world”, this is the phrase that Dana White, president of the UFC, repeats most in his interviews around the world. But, depending on Toronto, Canada, the top hat's statement will continue for a long time. Declared fans of Georges St Pierre, champion of the welterweight division, the Canadian audience surpasses impressive numbers at each event.
To give you an idea, the shirt with GSP's face is the best-selling product at the “UFC Fan Expo”, a product fair that Ultimate promotes on the weekend of the event. In addition to shirts, figures, DVDs and posters of the welterweight champion are sold impressively at the stands.
“St. Pierre is a Canadian idol. For every three products that leave the UFC store here in Toronto, two have GSP”, said attendant Dave, who works at the UFC stand.
Even in sports stores that don't specialize in fighting, Georges St Pierre is the best seller. Manager of Real Sports, a large sporting goods store located in downtown Toronto, Phillipe Dave, says there is great demand for items related to the champion.
“We sell all types of products. Basketball, hockey, baseball, but nothing beats GSP. He is a mania among Canadians”, said Dave, who did not fail to risk his prediction for the long-awaited duel against Jake Shields.
“GSP wins by knockout. He needs to win to keep selling,” he joked.
