The fight world was taken by surprise on Tuesday night when the Nevada State Athletic Commission announced that a urine sample from Thiago Silva, collected after UFC 125, was not human. O SUPER FIGHTS contacted Conan Silveira, leader of the Brazilian fighter's team, and the commander said he did not know details of the case.
“We just received this information, so I can’t say anything. It’s all very recent,” said Conan. “As soon as I have something, I will contact you,” he added.
However, Thiago Silva released, on Wednesday afternoon, an official note, in English, in which he admits that he altered the urine samples taken after his performance against the North American Brandon Vera.
“I used a urine adulterator when I gave my sample after the fight with Brandon Vera. I did this with the intention of tampering with the test results and knew I was violating Nevada Athletic Commission rules. This was a terrible decision on my part that I will be punished for. I'm prepared to accept the punishment, learn from it and move on. I apologize to the Commission, the UFC, Brandon Vera and MMA fans”, said Thiago, who tried to justify the fraud due to the back pain he felt during his preparation for the fight.
“I also want to explain the circumstances that motivated this attitude. Please do not interpret it as an attempt to justify my actions… The only way to continue fighting was to take injections in the back that contained substances banned by the Athletic Commission. I also made the decision to use a product to hide the presence of these substances in a urine test,” the statement said. The fighter also took full responsibility and guarantees that he acted alone, without the help of a professional.
“The decisions were mine and mine alone. I didn't share this information with anyone else for fear they wouldn't allow me to fight. I definitely made a terrible decision”…. “I will accept whatever punishment I receive and I will learn from it. I hope to return as a better person and professional as a result of this”, concluded the statement.
