UFC President Dana White denied the newly crowned welterweight champion's request, Tyron woodley, and confirmed that Stephen Thompson will be the next challenger for the belt in the 77 kg category.
Shortly after knocking out Robbie Lawler and win the title last month, Woodley made an unusual request for his first defense. With an eye on a “money fight”, the new champion showed his desire to have his next fight against Georges St Pierre ou Nick Diaz.
Nick had even received public support from his younger brother, Nate diaz, who asked the UFC to give him a title shot. White, however, denied: “There are other guys who deserve a title fight. Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson will fight for the welterweight belt and then we'll see what happens with Nick and Nate,” he said, in an interview with the UFC's official website.
Thompson, 33 years old, has won seven in a row, including two victories over the tops welterweight John hendricks e Rory McDonald.
