Former UFC featherweight title challenger, Chad Mendes spoke out for the first time since being notified of an irregularity in an out-of-competition test carried out by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

The North American avoided making wild excuses and accepted his share of the blame for the episode. “I didn’t do my homework and that was a big mistake. I deserved it and I will pay for it”, wrote Mendes, in a message published on his personal Twitter account.

However, it has not yet been disclosed what irregularity Mendes committed during his exam. Consequently, the punishment that the athlete will have to pay before being released to return to the UFC octagon has not been determined.

At 31 years old, Mendes has a record of 17 wins and four losses. In the past, the fighter competed for the belt in the under-66 kg category three times, losing to José Aldo twice, in addition to another setback against Conor McGregor for the interim title. In his most recent fight, the fighter ended up being knocked out by Frankie Edgar still in the first round.
