In the early days of MMA, before the sport even had that name, the main objective of the tournaments was to define which martial art was better and more efficient in a fight. More than two decades later, the sport can, in a way, return to its roots and see a duel between two of the biggest names in different disciplines: Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The unlikely duel between the MMA star and the former boxing champion, who retired undefeated last year, would even have an agreement signed, according to information from the English tabloid “The Sun”. According to the newspaper, the fight would take place in 2016.

A source close to Mayweather, who preferred to remain anonymous, explained what motivated the American to accept the duel. “Floyd got nervous when Conor said he would knock him out in 30 seconds. He's obsessed with making him eat his words. Floyd is dictating the rules, it will be a strictly boxing fight and Conor will have to lose around 25 pounds (around 12 kg)”, he assured.

Floyd Mayweather has not fought since September 2015, when he beat Andre Berto and achieved his 49th professional boxing victory. Already Conor McGregor was defeated by Nate diaz in March of this year, in his first setback in the Octagon, and was recently cut from the historic UFC 200 after refusing to participate in the event's promotional schedule.

If Mayweather x McGregor gets off the ground, beforehand, it is possible to say that the fight has everything it takes to become one of the biggest sellers pay-per-view in history – as Floyd has the record in boxing (4,6 million PPV) and McGregor was in two of the three biggest PPVs in UFC history.
