The fines he received last week cost him dearly. Jon Jones. This Tuesday (29), the former UFC light heavyweight champion was arrested in the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico (USA), for having failed to comply with the terms of the probation he was supposed to follow since he was involved in a controversial accident traffic in 2015.

In the last week, Jones received five tickets while driving in the city where he lives. The most serious of these was, according to the police officer who administered the punishment, taking part in a fight. The others were due to an excessively noisy exhaust, an illegible license plate, disrespecting the painted stripes on the asphalt and reckless driving.

The infractions alone would not land Jones in jail, but the fighter should stay until October without getting involved in any type of traffic problems. This is because, in April last year, the athlete crossed a red light, hit a car driven by a pregnant woman and fled the scene without providing assistance to the victim.

As he admitted his guilt in court, Jones was placed on probation for 18 months, in addition to having to perform 72 sessions of community service. Last week's fines therefore represented a serious breach of the agreement.

Jones surrendered to police in the local morning and remained in custody during the afternoon. The UFC spoke briefly on the matter: “The UFC is aware that Jon Jones turned himself in to police for a potential probation violation stemming from a traffic stop last week. The UFC is in contact with Jones' legal team and will not comment until there is appropriate time to gather the necessary information,” the organization said in a statement.

At 28 years old, Jones is a former UFC light heavyweight champion (up to 93 kg). Still considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, the American was only stripped of the title precisely due to the traffic accident in April 2015. On the 23rd of next month, Jones is scheduled to fight against the current weight champion , Daniel Cormier, in the main fight of UFC 197.
