Pacquiao caused public outrage when stating on a television program that “homosexuals were worse than animals”. The fighter recanted shortly after and apologized, despite insisting that he continues to be against gay marriage for religious reasons.

Nike, which signed Pacquiao ten years ago, strongly repudiated his statements. “We find Pacquiao’s comments abhorrent. Nike strongly opposes discrimination of any kind and has a long history of supporting the rights of the LGBT community. We no longer have a relationship with Manny Pacquiao,” the North American company clarified in a statement.

Pacquiao, 37 years old, is one of the most influential sportsmen in the Philippines, having even held a position as a parliamentarian in the country. His next fight will be on April 9th, against Timothy Bradley, which will be his last appearance in professional boxing.
