Brazil experiences year after year an intense battle against the Aedes aegypti mosquito, a vector of diseases such as dengue, yellow fever and chikungunya. And this time, a UFC fighter ended up succumbing to the little insect. Paranaguá native John Lineker was diagnosed with dengue fever and was removed from the UFC Pittsburgh card, an event that will take place this Sunday (21).

Lineker would face the North American cody garbrandt, in a fight that would put two promising athletes in the bantamweight division (up to 61 kg) face to face. However, in the final stretch of his preparation, the 25-year-old fighter ended up being forced to withdraw from the fight.
The announcement was made on its official Instagram account. “Guys, everyone knows about the dengue epidemic in our city, although he has been taking all the necessary precautions, John Lineker caught this blessed dengue fever and because his platelets are low he won't be able to fight next Sunday. The fight will be postponed and we don't have a date yet! John is sad about not being able to fight, which is what he loves doing most, all the preparation was very well done”, says the statement. “We thank the entire preparation team, all the doctors who are helping with Lineker's recovery, all the supporters. Thank you very much. We apologize to the fans who were waiting for the fight this Sunday, we will soon have a new date against the same opponent, cody garbrandt. We apologize to cody garbrandt. I know how bad it is to do all the preparation and not be able to fight. We all suffer, but there are things we cannot avoid! Now we need to wait for the fight to be rescheduled”, he added.
