The MMA world went into ecstasy last week with the information that Conor McGregor, UFC featherweight champion, would move up to the lightweight division to challenge the belt holder, Rafael dos Anjos, at UFC 197. However, the plans face an unexpected obstacle: according to the website of the “Combate” channel, the Irishman asked for an increase in his purse for the fight, which postponed its officialization.
The fight between McGregor and Dos Anjos has not yet been made official by the UFC, but the plans were leaked following several reports in the North American press. The Irishman, seeing the huge repercussion of the news, considered that the purse stipulated in the contract would not be big enough for a fight of this size.
“Combate” says that the UFC’s official announcement was supposed to be made last Sunday (10), but the financial impasse put plans on hold.
Also on Sunday, Dos Anjos' manager, Ali Abdelaziz, posted a mysterious message on Twitter: “Guess what? Runaway champion,” he wrote, also posting an image of several chickens, which represent cowards in North American culture.
