UFC on FOX 17, an event held in Orlando (USA), represented an important situation for alistair overeem. The Dutch heavyweight would have the last fight of his contract with the organization, and the result of the fight with junior gypsy would be essential for negotiations regarding a renewal. After beating the Brazilian, Overeem now believes that the new agreement will include an immediate chance to compete for the division's belt.

Overeem had a good performance in Orlando and defeated former champion Cigano by technical knockout in the second round, without any major scares. After the fight, the Dutchman was eager to resume talks with Ultimate. “My focus was on this big fight, on training, on preparing for it. Now, let's look at the whole situation. And I'm looking forward to it – I think the title fight is there. But let’s see what happens”, said the fighter, in a post-event press conference.
According to the Dutchman, his corner had a great influence on the move that defined the fight. “Junior has dangerous hands and dropped some bombs on me. After a certain point in the fight, he seemed more aggressive, taking more risks. That’s when my corner said it was the right time to strike, and that’s what I did,” he added.
