UFC FN 80: Serginho steals the show with knockout victory

Mallet surprises and takes away Theodorou's invincibility; Cara de Sapato fight ends in no-contest with accidental fingerprint

The TUF Brasil veterans experienced different sensations in the octagon of UFC Fight Night 80, an event held this Thursday (10), at the opening of the marathon of attractions in Las Vegas, in the United States. Veteran of the inaugural season, Serginho Moraes celebrated victory by knockout, while Antonio Shoe Guy, champion of the third edition, saw his fight end quickly with a no-contest.

Serginho did not have an easy life and had to survive a punishment of Omari Akhmedov, who came close to knocking him out in the first round. The Russian caught the Brazilian with a beautiful counterattack, with a punch to the temple, which almost decided the fight. However, André Dida's pupil was more aggressive on his feet in the third round and managed to turn the game around, giving his opponent a technical knockout with well-aimed punches.

Shoe Face had a quick participation in the octagon in Las Vegas. In the opening seconds of his fight against Kevin Casey, the TUF Brazil 3 champion accidentally poked the American in the eye, which caused the referee to immediately stop. Casey, with his eye bleeding, reported that he could not see, which led to combat being declared. no-contest, that is, a fight without result.

The event in Las Vegas also saw the defeat of Johnny Eduardo for aljamain sterling and the good victories of the Argentine Santiago Ponzinibbio in front of Andreas Stahl and Thiago Marreta about Elias Theodorou.

Sledgehammer takes away Canadian's invincibility

Thiago Marreta surprised the betting markets and ousted favorite Elias Theodorou, TUF Nations champion. The Brazilian managed to impose his game throughout the 15 minutes of action and prevailed in the judges' decision.

Theodorou started with more initiative, delivering plastic kicks, although not very efficient. From the second round onwards, the Canadian tried to grab Marreta and take the fight to the ground, but without success. From then on, Marreta was able to take advantage of the gaps and counterattack, which even opened a gigantic cut above Theodorou's right eyebrow. 

At the end of the fight, all the judges gave Marreta victory over the Canadian, who thus experienced the first defeat of his professional career.

In the duel of generations between bantamweights, it's better for the youngest. aljamain sterling, 26 years old, had a very tactical fight against the Brazilian Johnny Eduardo, 37, and won without taking any major risks, with a submission in the second round.

Aware of the Brazilian's sharp striking, Sterling, his training partner, Chris Weidman, he avoided going into an open fight, keeping his distance and knowing the right time to attack. At opportune moments in both the first and second rounds, the North American got the takedown and worked dangerously on the ground and pound. Eduardo, however, tried to get up and ended up leaving his neck exposed, allowing Sterling to guillotine him.

the argentine Santiago Ponzinibbio, who gained fame among the fans thanks to his participation in TUF Brasil 2, was also present at UFC Fight Night 80. The “Argentine Gente Boa” massacred Andreas Stahl and found his way back to victory with a knockout in the first round.

Ponzinibbio dictated the pace of practically the entire fight. Stahl appeared cornered and tried, unsuccessfully, to take the fight to the ground. The Argentine remained standing and undermined his rival with kicks and punches, and settled the score after 4min25s of action, with a well-aimed punch. Ponzinibbio celebrated the victory with a half-Argentine, half-Brazilian flag, and dedicated the triumph to all of Latin America.
