At WSOF 22, Toquinho submitted Jake Shields in a fight surrounded by controversy. The Brazilian was accused of putting his fingers in his opponent's eyes several times during the fight, something prohibited by the rules, in addition to holding the final blow, a kimura, even after Shields gave up.
Toquinho had already been suspended by the WSOF, in addition to losing the organization's welterweight belt. However, the Nevada Commission went further and applied the punishment, which will be retroactive to the date of the fight – that is, from August 2, 2017, Toquinho will be free to fight.
Now 35 years old, the Brazilian fighter's career is surrounded by controversies of this nature. In 2013, he was fired from the UFC after holding on to a submission for longer than necessary in a fight against Mike Pierce.
