Current UFC light heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier commented on the outcome of the case involving the traffic accident of Jon Jones and said he hopes his arch-rival uses the experience to improve as a person.

In April of this year, Jones, then light heavyweight champion, was involved in a traffic accident in Albuquerque (USA). The fighter ran through a red light and hit a car driven by a pregnant woman. Jones then fled without rendering aid. The UFC, shortly after, stripped the fighter of his belt and suspended him indefinitely.

This Tuesday (29), the Albuquerque court placed the fighter on probation for 18 months, in addition to forcing him to perform community services with children in the city.

“Jon is not getting away with it. He will now be able to help young children and guide them so that they do not make the same mistakes he made in his life. I hope that, on the other hand, he becomes a better person and goes back to doing what he does best, which is fighting”, said Cormier, in an interview with the North American website “MMA Fighting”.

Cormier will make his first title defense this Saturday (3), against Alexander Gustafson. For him, the perfect scenario would result in a victory over the Swede, plus a rematch with Jones in the future. “I would love to fight him. I have to go through Alexander Gustafson first, and then we'll see what happens. But yes, I would love that Jon Jones was my opponent next”, he commented.

Cormier was directly affected by the issues involving Jones. He had lost to the then champion in January, at UFC 182. However, with all the confusion in April, Jones was cut from the fight he would have at UFC 187 and Cormier came in to replace him, in a fight that would have won the vacant belt against Anthony Johnson. Cormier won by submission.
