John Dodson had a very busy week before fighting for the UFC flyweight belt. The fighter's wife gave birth to the couple's daughter a few days before the fight, which caused Dodson to leave his training to attend the birth. Even so, he claims that none of this was a distraction from the fight for the belt with Demetrious Johnson, having been satisfied with the outcome of events.
“I’m not complaining about anything that happened this week. I had a baby, my mother had a birthday, but there were no distractions. It was a great week. Even today is a cool night – I didn't win the title, but it's been amazing. I will come back stronger next time and beat whoever I have to beat to have another chance to fight for the belt”, said Dodson, in a press conference shortly after the fight.
Dodson and Johnson had already faced each other in 2013, and, at the time, the fight was more even in favor of the champion. The challenger, once again defeated, explains what happened. “The first time we fought we didn't know each other's strengths, but this time I went in there more cautious. And he worried about pushing the pace and did a good job. I can’t say anything bad about him because he’s still the champion” he explained.
