The mother of Ronda Rousey has served as a mentor to the UFC champion since she was a child. AnnMaria de Mars, the first American to become world judo champion, always appears alongside her daughter giving important advice on how to deal with her career. This time, she gave Rousey an important warning: beware of sycophants.

According to De Mars, the more a person gains fame and money, the more susceptible they are to entering a kind of “bubble”, in which they are surrounded by people who are afraid to make any criticism. She fears this will be the case for her daughter.
“I think some people who hang out with her are idiots. I've always read articles that say that elite athletes and personalities always get hurt by being in a 'bubble'. No one ever looked Michael Jackson in the eye and said, 'Don't hang around those little kids! This is too strange. Find an adult woman, man or monkey. And stop using drugs,'” the former athlete wrote on her blog.
She continues: “The more famous, rich or successful you become, the more people are afraid of you. Even the most wonderful person in the world does stupid things, but the difference is, if you're rich and famous, people around you won't say you did sh*t,” warned AnnMaria.
The fighter's mother herself saw an episode up close in which someone wanted to criticize Ronda, but refused out of fear. “Some people have already told me that they disagree with some of Ronda’s decisions. When I suggest they go talk to Ronda face to face, they make a lot of excuses. He was a grown man, but she was afraid that if he disagreed with her, she wouldn't let him hang out with her anymore. Honestly, this whole thing makes me sick,” she continued.
Ronda Rousey will return to the UFC octagon on January 2nd, in the main fight of event number 195. The champion will defend her belt again against the also undefeated Holly holm, former world boxing champion.
