Former muay thai world champion who recently joined the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), Valdet Gashi died in combat last week, the fighter's family said.

Gashi, 29, had joined the extremist group in January this year. At the time, the German of Albanian origin had left his homeland, where he was married with two children, claiming he was going to Thailand to train.

Last month, he confirmed that he had joined ISIS, where he was active near the Euphrates River, looking for smugglers for illegal drug goods, such as cigarettes, alcohol or drugs.

In a recent interview, Gashi stated that “he would be happy if he died doing something good”. His death conditions were not detailed by his family.
