Melendez fought on June 13, at UFC 188, in Mexico City, where he ended up losing a judge's decision to Eddie Alvarez. Despite denying having ingested any type of prohibited substance, the American accepted the UFC's decision.

“Unfortunately, I tested positive with my urine sample after UFC 188. I did not inject anything [prohibited], but I am responsible and accept the consequences of the results. I will ensure that I have more knowledge about the products I will use and their implications. I sincerely apologize to everyone who supports me, including my fans, sponsors and the UFC. I value your trust and will do everything possible to maintain it,” said Melendez, in a statement sent to the press by the UFC.
