After UFC 188, much was said about the effect of altitude on the course of the fights, as many fighters felt ill in the rarefied air of Mexico City. Cain Velazquez, who lost the heavyweight belt to Fabricio Werdum, stated that this was a factor that interfered in his defeat. However, the new champion's coach minimized the statements.

For Rafael Cordeiro, the result of the fight between Werdum and Velasquez reflects the current situation faced by both athletes. “If Werdum fights with Cain Velazquez ten times, wins ten times. I think people should stop finding explanations for the results. If you missed it, you missed it, then get back to the gym and train. It's a sport. Did you have a bad result? Train more”, he analyzed, in an interview with the “MMA Fighting” website.

“The altitude was the same for everyone. The fight was announced and everyone knew they would have to deal with the altitude, so they went there a month early. But even going there a month in advance is no guarantee that you will win. You need to be prepared to fight. We always believed in Werdum, and he proved to be the best fighter on the planet”, continued the coach, who carried out the last two months of Werdum's preparation in Mexico City, in order to adapt to the local conditions.

Werdum managed to unify the heavyweight belt by submitting Velasquez in the third round, becoming only the second Brazilian to become linear champion of the category – the other is junior gypsy, who could be his next opponent.
