When Fabricio Werdum, once again, shocked the MMA world and submitted the champion Cain Velazquez in the third round of the main fight of UFC 188, this Saturday (13), there was no shortage of justifications for what happened: such as the long period of inactivity of the North American, who had not fought since October 2013, or even the altitude of more than 2 thousand meters from Mexico City, which could have harmed his physical conditioning. However, Cain himself tried to rule out the hypotheses during the press conference after the event and congratulated Werdum on his achievement.

“I think I should have stayed here (in Mexico) longer, to get used to it. But neither that nor even my 20 months of inactivity had any impact tonight. Nothing was wrong with me. Fabrício (Werdum) was better tonight. That’s it”, said the now two-time former champion of the 120 kg category.
Cain also analyzed the crucial moment of his defeat, when he attempted a takedown and ended up submitted by Werdum, and assured that he was prepared to fight on the ground against the Brazilian, but that he commented on a mistake in that attempt. “I was ready to fight on the ground. He grabbed my neck, I kept my head outside. It was my fault”, analyzed Velasquez, who also compared the sadness of losing the belt with the first time he went through this experience, in 2011, when he was knocked out by Junior Gypsy in the first edition of UFC on FOX.
At 32, Cain Velazquez he now has a professional record of 13 wins and two losses. The setback against Werdum interrupted Velasquez's four-fight unbeaten streak, all involving Brazilian athletes.
