Even though Chris Weidman been UFC champion for almost two years, defeating names like Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida and most recently Vitor belfort, there are still those who doubt the North American’s ability. However, the legendary Renzo Gracie sent a very direct message to those who do not consider the North American capable of truly occupying such a prominent position.

Gracie has closely followed Weidman's evolution in recent years, and recently gave the UFC champion his black belt in jiu-jitsu. For him, Weidman's achievements in the octagon are quite clear and admirable, which could mean a long reign in the middleweight division.

“Anyone who doesn’t respect him is ignorant, they’re letting stupidity speak. Chris never lost. Totally out of shape, he picked up a fight against Demian Maia and, even though he was fat, he won. Who thinks he leaves something to be desired... My friend, the day I gave him his black belt, I saw him finish four old black belts, students of mine. He's a different guy. I don't see anyone taking him away for a long time. If he continues at this pace, he will remain champion for a long time. And he doesn't give a shit whether they'll respect him or not. He’s a guy who works a lot,” analyzed Renzo, in an interview with the “Combat” channel’s website.

For Renzo, Weidman has already dispatched the two fighters who were, theoretically, most threatening to his game. “The most dangerous were Vitor and Lyoto, who are exponents in a different way, they have greater unpredictability than those who are now in the category. Opponents will have to create, use their imagination to surprise Chris, who is skilled and intelligent. But no one can stop talking about [Ronaldo] Jacaré, who is one of the greatest. If you put Jacaré at heavyweight, he's going to be a handful. It's a tough fight for any opponent. It's going to be a blast, but Chris is physically much bigger than Jacaré. Just changing and imposing the game is complicated for anyone. Chris isn’t fooling around, he studies everyone and sees how his opponents are fighting”, commented Renzo.

Weidman's next title defense does not yet have a confirmed date. The UFC also hasn't announced who his next opponent will be, but it should be either Jacaré or the American Luke Rockhold.
