After being away from fights for more than a year due to injury, Carlos Condit returned to the UFC in style. The North American defeated Thiago Pitbull with a medical interruption in the main fight of UFC Fight Night 67, held in the city of Goiânia (GO) on Saturday night, May 30th.
Condit came very close to knocking out Pitbull in the second round, landing powerful blows to the Brazilian's face, especially elbows. Surprisingly, Pitbull managed to survive the assault, although his nose was badly damaged. However, the CABMMA doctor, Márcio Tannure, assessed that Pitbull was unable to continue, with a broken nose, declaring Condit's victory by technical knockout.
With this, Condit shakes off his bad phase, as he had suffered three defeats in his last four fights. Pitbull now sees his good run of results being interrupted, after victories over Seth Baczynski and Jordan Mein.
The fight
Condit started surrounding the Brazilian, working strikes to keep Pitbull at bay. The fighters exchange some low kicks, attacking the thigh. Still with a lot of study on the part of both, Condit tries a round kick, but it goes empty. The American tries a sequence of punches and kicks to the body, but Pitbull defends. The Brazilian advances and works well with a low kick. The two start to loosen up, but the round ends.
Condit starts trying to follow up, but Pitbull defends himself well. The Brazilian lands a good low kick. Pitbull counterattacks Condit, always landing kicks to the thigh. Condit counterattacks Pitbull with a well-aimed elbow, which knocks the Brazilian down. The Ceará native defends himself, but Condit goes all out. Pitbull turns his back and the American continues striking. Pitbull survives and gets up, which drives the crowd crazy. Thiago gets up and attacks Condit.
The North American clinches and takes Pitbull down, throwing blows and going for the back. Condit locks in a rear naked choke, but Pitbull defends himself and falls to the bottom. The American continues to strike, but Pitbull defends himself as best he can. The two get up and start striking, with Pitbull landing good kicks. Condit takes Pitbull down again, but the round ends.
Between the second and third rounds, Pitbull was prevented by doctors from continuing in the fight, with a fractured nose. The victory goes to Condit, by technical knockout.
