Sales of Mayweather x Pacquiao should exceed 5 million and set boxing records

The already multimillion-dollar fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, held last Saturday (2), could exceed expectations and raise even more astronomical figures. According to preliminary information from the North American press, the fight would have sold approximately 5,6 million packages in pay-per-view in the United States.

If confirmed, the numbers would easily beat previous records already established in boxing history. The two biggest selling fights ever recorded, Mayweather x Oscar de la Roya (2,48 million) and Mayweather x Canelo Alvarez placeholder image (2,25 million), together, would be more than 800 thousand less than the “Fight of the Century”, won by Mayweather in the judges' decision.

According to the newspaper “The New York Times”, 30% to 40% of the amount raised in pay-per-view it is passed on to cable, satellite and telephone companies, and 7,5% goes to HBO and Showtime, which broadcast the fight. The rest would be distributed to the fighters, with the majority going to Mayweather.

Based on these numbers, Mayweather would easily earn more than $150 million in sales alone. pay-per-view, and Pacquiao would pocket more than US$110 million.

To get an idea of ​​the magnitude of the numbers, the absolute record for sales of pay-per-view in the UFC was established in the historic 100th event, in 2009. Counting on the stars Georges St Pierre e Brock Lesnar, the attraction won 1,6 million packages.
