Anderson Silva misses the hearing and receives temporary suspension due to doping cases

Final decision on Spider episodes, however, should only be made at a future disciplinary hearing, possibly in March

For his two doping cases before UFC 183, Anderson Silva is temporarily suspended until his case is fully assessed at a future disciplinary hearing. This was what the Nevada Athletic Commission decided at a meeting held on Tuesday night (17), in Las Vegas (USA).

Contrary to initial expectations, Anderson did not attend the meeting in person and was represented by one of his lawyers, Michael Alonso, over the phone. The legal representative only listened to the commissioner's considerations and did not present any type of defense or justification from the fighter. The hearing that will actually define the definitive punishment for Anderson Silva should happen in March.

In addition to Spider, the case of Nick Diaz, who tested positive for marijuana after his fight at UFC 183, was also on the agenda for the Athletic Commission meeting. Like Anderson, Diaz received a temporary suspension until his case is evaluated again at a disciplinary hearing, which is also expected to take place in the coming months.

Another athlete recently caught in an anti-doping test to be temporarily suspended by the regulatory body was the Cuban Hector Lombard. The welterweight was caught using the anabolic steroid deoxymethyltestosterone (or DMT) following his victory over Josh Burkmann at UFC 181 in December last year.

Bantamweight Ashlee Evans-Smith, who was caught using diuretics (substances used to mask the presence of others in the body) in her defeat to Rachel Pennington, also at UFC 181, was suspended for nine months and received a fine worth 30% of the US$8 (R$22,6) she received for performing at the event.

On February 3rd, a few days after winning Nick Diaz at UFC 183, it was announced that Anderson Silva had tested positive for the anabolic steroids drostanolone and androsterone in a surprise anti-doping test carried out on January 9th. A second examination, carried out on the 19th of the same month, did not show any trace of illegal substances. In the post-fight examination, however, Anderson tested positive again for anabolic steroids and, in addition, also for two anxiolytics, Oxazepam and Temazepam, medicines generally used to combat insomnia and sleep disorders.
