In a special program to promote the fight, Jones attacked “DC” by minimizing his rival's victory over Henderson in May, saying it was a triumph over “a 50-year-old man”. “Hendo” didn’t like the comment and criticized the champion’s personality. “He's like that and it doesn't take well when he does things like that. This doesn't irritate me at all. I know myself and I know how to behave. I don't respect him as a person. I've been saying this for a few years. He's not a very genuine person. He carries himself differently than he is and I think that's why people don't like him. If he didn’t do that, I don’t think anyone would see any problems”, commented Henderson, in an interview with “The MMA Hour” podcast.

However, the veteran praised Jones' performance inside the octagon, when he defeated Cormier in the judges' decision. “I always respected him as a fighter. I think he has great skills in all areas. I thought that DC's wrestling would make a difference in the fight and he ended up not being able to use it in the way he is capable of. Jones did a great job defending himself and taking DC down at times,” he concluded.
