St. Pierre says that returning to training has no relation to a possible return to MMA

A few weeks ago, MMA fans were hopeful with the news that Georges St Pierre, recovered from knee surgery, had returned to training at his gym. This is because there is still speculation about whether the former UFC welterweight champion will put retirement aside and return to the Octagon. However, the Canadian threw cold water on the fans when he explained his return to training.

In an interview with the podcast “You're Welcome!”, presented by the former fighter Chael Sonnen, St. Pierre explained that the fact has nothing to do with a possible return to the UFC. “I'll tell you the truth: I always train. I started training when I was seven years old and never stopped. Training is part of my life, so it doesn't mean anything. It doesn't mean I'll come back or not. Regardless of whether I retire or not, I will always train,” he said.

GSP also explained why he decided to give up the belt to temporarily step away from fighting. “I didn’t feel that hunger, that desire to fight. When I faced John hendricks, I came to the conclusion that he and the new guys would be much happier than I was with the title”, he detailed. “If you get beaten in another sport, it’s not so bad. But if you lose a fight in MMA, you suffer damage. Is very bad. I wanted to get some time away to see where I was going. If I return one day, it will be important that I reinvent myself and become a much better version of who I was.”

At 33 years old, St. Pierre has a record of 25 wins and two losses. In his last fight, he beat the current welterweight champion, John hendricks, in a tight decision by the judges in November 2013.
