The Brazilian Fabricio Werdum is scheduled to fight for the UFC heavyweight belt against the champion Cain Velazquez on November 15th. But the Gaucho athlete almost left the most important fight of his life in a tragic way. The fighter, who moved to Mexico to prepare for the fight, almost died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Werdum, together with his brother Felipe, Rafael Cordeiro, Renato Babalu and eight other training companions, rented a house in the city of Toluca and a gasoline generator caused all the trouble.

PUBLICITY:

"It was terrible. We came to Nevado de Toluca to train and we didn't see the house before renting it. There was no energy, nothing. And it was very cold. I was training with 12 other people from my team and they decided to rent a gasoline generator to generate energy. They usually leave this generator outside the house, but they put it inside”, Werdum told the North American website MMA Fighting

“We trained inside the house, had dinner and went to sleep. We were not told that we needed to turn off the generator before going to bed. I woke up in the middle of the night with an unbearable headache and nausea, I couldn't get out of bed. Everyone was dizzy. My brother was the one who managed to get out of bed and turn off the generator”, he added.

PUBLICITY:

“We almost died from poisoning. We went to the hospital, everyone was vomiting and had diarrhea. The doctor told us that we would die in another two hours if no one had managed to turn off the generator”, he concluded.

After the incident, Werdum assured that his entire team is doing well and will use the episode to gain strength in the title fight against Cain Velazquez, in the main fight of UFC 180, in the show that marks the debut in Ultimate in Mexican territory.

PUBLICITY:

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. It made me stronger (laughs). We're fine now. It was a huge scare, we almost died. Imagine the headline: 'Werdum moves his camp to Mexico and dies with the entire team'. We were looking for some fresh air and almost died from carbon monoxide poisoning (laughs),” she joked.
