Recently, some cases involving doping have broken out in MMA. Among them are episodes of Brian ortega, after UFC on FOX 12, and Kevin Casey, who tested positive after UFC 175. Both fighters, caught using steroids, trained at Black House, a gym where names like Anderson Silva e Lyoto Machida.
However, Ed Soares, one of the gym's partners and fighter manager, minimized what happened. For him, the episodes do not represent the general scenario of his team. "It's not what it looks like. Ortega only attends the Black House for 10% of his training time, while Casey trains for 75% of his time with us,” said Soares, in an interview with the North American website “MMA Junkie”. “But in all the time I’ve been working with athletes, I think this has only happened three times, and it happened to be two of them in a month-long period.”
The businessman believes that the fighters ingested prohibited substances in an attempt to facilitate the weight loss process. I think Brian was going to fight in Brazil and the fight was canceled a week before it was supposed to take place. He was very upset and gained weight. The UFC gave him a fight four or five weeks in advance, he was maybe overweight and tried to do something about it,” he commented. “ I don't know what these things do, but he discovered something to lose weight. I don't discuss it with them too deeply, I comforted him more or less because he was down. People make mistakes, and I told him I was upset about what happened, but I wasn't going to turn my back on him. I hope he learns from this”, concluded Soares.
