Eddie Alvarez reaches agreement and is released from contract by Bellator

North American fighter, one of the most highly regarded lightweights today, is free to sign with another organization

One of the most highly regarded lightweights today, Eddie Alvarez could be getting closer to joining the UFC. This Tuesday (19), the North American made his departure from Bellator, the organization in which he held the belt, official. The announcement was made by Bellator CEO, Scott Coker, on the website of the North American broadcaster “ESPN”.

With this, Alvarez becomes an immediate free agent, ending a long romance between the fighter and the organization. Since 2012, Alvarez has been facing legal battles with Bellator, including trying to cancel his agreement with the organization in order to sign with the UFC.

Also on the “ESPN” website, Alvarez gave a statement in which he comments on the matter. “It was a long process, but it is a decision that should make everyone happy. I think it's important to say that I'm genuinely grateful to Bellator. I know it might sound a little crazy considering everything we've been through, but I've been fighting there since 2009 and been involved in some incredible fights. The team has always treated me great and I will miss a lot of familiar faces for sure. My team and I had good conversations with Scott, but in my heart I knew I was ready to move on and start the next chapter of my career.”

At 30 years old, Alvarez has a record of 25 wins and three losses, having already beaten names like Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri, Joachim Hansen, Patricky Pitbull e Michael chandler.
