Head coach of Jon Jones, Greg Jackson detailed the causes of injury that removed the light heavyweight champion from the UFC 178 card, in September, when he would face Daniel Cormier.

According to Jackson, Jones was undergoing wrestling training with fellow UFC athlete alistair overeem, when he “stepped the wrong way” and ended up tearing the meniscus in his left knee, in addition to twisting his ankle. "It's part of the game. He went for a takedown, Jones stepped the wrong way, turned the wrong way and went to the ground. He was struggling and ended up twisting, and then it clicked,” Jackson explained to the North American website “Sherdog”.

The coach ruled out any possibility of recklessness in what happened, attributing the incident to a fatality. “Alistair maybe weighs 108kg and Jon maybe 99kg. It's not that he was fighting a giant. It was one of the things that happens,” he opined.

This is the second time that Overeem has been involved in an incident that resulted in an injury to a training partner. At their old gym, Blackzilians, where they also train Vitor belfort e Rashad evans, the Dutchman trained with Guto Inocente when the Brazilian injured his knee. Shortly after this, Overeem left the team to join Jackson's Submission Fighting.
