Earlier this week, the Nevada Athletic Commission threatened to fine Chael Sonnen in more than half a million reais (US$250 thousand), if the North American, suspended by the entity after being caught twice in surprise anti-doping tests in the first half of the year, participated in the submission Metamoris 4. Despite the warning from the regulatory body, Sonnen guaranteed his presence on this Saturday's card (09) in Los Angeles (USA), when he takes on the main fight against Brazilian André Galvão.
“When a gangster says he is going to walk (an expression related to turning his words into actions), he TAKES THE WALK,” Sonnen published on his official profile on Twitter. In addition to the message from the athlete himself, his jiu-jitsu coach, Brazilian Fabiano “Pega-leve” Scherner, told the “MMA Fighting” website that the North American decided to travel to Los Angeles and participate in the tournament.
The main point in Sonnen's favor on the issue is that submission or jiu-jitsu competitions are outside the jurisdiction of the Nevada Athletic Commission, or any other state Athletic Commission in the United States. Therefore, its rules and punishments are not applicable to athletes who participate in tournaments of this order. Sonnen even hired renowned Las Vegas lawyer Ross C. Goodman, but contacts with the Commission were not returned and the final decision was made to compete in Metamoris.
