Alexander Gustafson gave more details about the injury that took him out of UFC 178, in September, when he would have a rematch against Jon Jones in a fight valid for the organization's light heavyweight belt.

In an interview with the official UFC website, the Swede said that he tore the meniscus in his right knee during training, without immediately realizing the seriousness of the incident. “I was sparring and I felt my knee pop twice, but it didn't hurt. I just felt strange. I finished training and returned home. The next day I got up in the morning and I could barely step with my right leg. There I immediately felt my right knee”, said the fighter.

Due to the injury, Gustafsson will have to undergo surgery and will be out of activity for a period ranging from five to six weeks. The Swede does not hide his disappointment, but stated that he will see what happened as an opportunity to improve. “I'm disappointed that I won't be able to fight, but this isn't the end. It's just the beginning. I will come back much stronger”, he promised.

Following his departure from UFC 178, the organization quickly announced Daniel Cormier as a substitute to face Jon Jones. Gustafsson analyzed the fight: “It's an interesting fight marriage. Both are great athletes and it will be a tough fight, for sure. But Jones has the advantage in height and wingspan, and I think that will be fundamental in this fight. I think Jones wins by decision”, he said.
