The rematch between Jon Jones e Alexander Gustafson, which was scheduled for UFC 178 in September, will have to be postponed. The Swede suffered an injury during training and was forced to leave the fight, making room for Daniel Cormier challenge the UFC light heavyweight champion. The information was released by the organization itself on Wednesday night (23).
Gustafsson tore the meniscus in one of his knees, although not many details of what happened have yet been released. The Swede and Jones faced each other for the first time in September last year, with the American winning in a tight judges' decision.
Cormier, 35 years old, reaches the title fight after a meteoric career in MMA. Strikeforce Heavyweight GP Champion in 2012, beating names like Antonio Pezão and Josh Barnett, “DC”, as he is known, arrived in the UFC last year. Still working in the up to 120 kg category, the North American defeated Frank mir e Roy Nelson, but decided to drop in weight since the heavyweight champion, Cain Velazquez, is your training partner.
In the up to 93 kg category, Cormier won two victories, over the inexperienced Patrick Cummins and the veteran Dan Henderson. In the title fight, the American will put his perfect record to the test, which has 15 wins in 15 fights.
At 27 years old, Jones is considered the best pound-for-pound fighter today. “Bones” won the title in 2011, and since then he has defended his belt seven times, a record for the category. In his last fight, he hit Glover Teixeira in the judges' decision in April.
UFC 178 will take place on September 27th, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas (USA).
