Recently retired from MMA after controversy involving an anti-doping test, Chael Sonnen confessed to having ingested prohibited substances. The American stated that, after the end of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), he tried to stimulate his body to produce the hormone in greater quantities, since, among other problems, he was trying to get his wife pregnant.
The argument was reinforced by midfielder Don Catlin, a specialist in anti-doping tests. He, who, among other functions, supervised the tests at the last three Olympics held in the United States (two summer and one winter), showed that he understood Sonnen's intentions.
“He stopped taking TRT and now needs to 'wake up' his system, which is repressed. So he's doing what he should do medically, to overhaul his system. The problem is that what he is using is blocked and banned by the sport. So he gets caught up in this, when all he is trying to do is be normal again”, commented the doctor, in an interview with the North American channel “AXS TV”.
However, the expert was in favor of banning TRT in sport, as the justifications for using the practice were not always legitimate. “At the Olympics, there are a lot of men who try to get approval to use TRT, but they have to go through a commission, of which I'm part, and they never go through. We never left. So we will never give anyone approval to use testosterone because we know that is false. I know this field. I've been doing this for 25, 30 years, and I know that all the men who come in and say they have hypogonadism are lying,” he continued.
