Renzo Gracie says arrest after nightclub fight was 'a misunderstanding'

Brazilian fighter says he has always had a great relationship with 1-Oak employees

Shortly after being released from prison, Renzo Gracie gave his first statement about the incident that occurred in front of a nightclub in New York (USA), which led to him and six other people being detained.

In the early hours of Monday, at approximately 1:30 am local time, Renzo, his cousin Igor and five other people were involved in a fight with employees of the 1-Oak nightclub. One of the site's security guards, Craig Molesphini, 35 years old, suffered a fractured right arm, as well as scratches and cuts, according to the New York Post website. After being detained, the Brazilian fighter paid a US$10 bail and was released.

Through a text message sent to the North American website MMA Fighting, Renzo stated: “Everything is a misunderstanding. We have always had a great relationship with that amazing nightclub and all of its employees. Soon, everything will be clarified,” he declared.

The fighter is being charged with second-degree gang assault, according to the New York Police Department. “Collective aggression” is characterized when it occurs through two or more people. According to FOX Sports, the potential sentence for what happened could be up to 15 years in prison.
