UFC Fight Night 40: Johnny Eduardo shines and wins fourth in the ranking; Sapo and Yan lose

Brazilian was not intimidated by almost two years away from the Octagon and knocked out Eddie Wineland

The Brazilian Johnny Eduardo returned to the octagon in style. Away from the UFC since 2011, the Nova União athlete surprised the favorite Eddie Wineland on the preliminary card of UFC Fight Night 40, an event held this Saturday night (10), in Cincinnati, in the United States. The other Brazilians in the initial fight program did not have the same luck. Yan Cabral and Rafael Sapo were defeated by Zak Cummings and Ed Herman, respectively.

Johnny Eduardo surprises fourth in the ranking

The almost two years without an official fight, due to a series of injuries, were not missed by Johnny Eduardo. The representative of Nova União was not aware of Eddie Wineland, fourth in the bantamweight category, and knocked out the North American.

Once the fight started, Johnny worked on low kicks while Wineland worked on boxing combinations. But after an attack from Eddie, the Brazilian responded with a counter blow and shook his rival. Eduardo then landed another punch and knocked out his rival in a sensational way.

Sapo fights evenly and loses by decision

In a balanced fight, Ed Herman defeated the Brazilian Rafael Sapo in a very balanced decision. The Brazilian started better, working with low kicks and managed to take down his rival with one of these blows. On top, he scored points, but the North American got up and managed a takedown. On top in the final moments of the partial, Ed scored points.

The second round remained balanced and Sapo again started on top in the ground fight, but the referee interrupted the Brazilian's actions and the duel resumed standing up, for a long time in the clinch, without any great moments for the fighters. However, Herman pressed Sapo against the bars.

In the third round Sapo, already showing fatigue, was unable to maintain the pace of the fight. The Brazilian was easily hit by Herman and was unable to take the fight to the ground. At the end of the fight, Sapo still had a cut near his right eye, which was bleeding a lot and visibly bothered him during the fight.

Yan starts well, but loses first in UFC

After 11 consecutive victories, Yan Cabral suffered his first defeat in MMA. The Brazilian even started the fight well against Zak Cummings.

After suffering an imbalance in the exchange of blows, Yan fell on the bottom, but managed to land a triangle, which was well defended by his rival. Cabral still landed some elbows on the ground, but without success in finishing.

With the initial momentum, Yan ended up feeling the rhythm and tiring in the second round. Cummings took advantage of the moment, avoided the ground game and worked well with boxing strikes.

In the third round, with the fight balanced, Zak Cummings' physical conditioning made the difference. The North American defended the Brazilian's takedowns and also came out on top in the ground fight, where he tried to finish the fight with a choke. With great technique, Yan defended the submission and still came out on top in the ground fight.

From then on, Yan opened the game in search of the finish. He tried a Kimura, a hand triangle and an armbar, but all the attacks were well defended by the North American.

At the end of three rounds, Zak Cummings won the unanimous decision of the judges with a triple 29×28.
