Now it's official. The co-main event of UFC 173, which will be held on May 24th in Las Vegas in the United States, will be between light heavyweights Daniel Cormier e Dan Henderson.
The fight has been publicized in the press for a few weeks, although confirmation from the UFC only came this Wednesday (23). The announcement was made by the organization's president, Dana White, in an interview with the North American broadcaster “ESPN”.
Henderson, 43 years old, will try to continue his good form after the knockout against Mauritius Shogun at UFC Natal, last month. The triumph over the Brazilian marked the end of a negative streak of three defeats by the North American. However, the fight with Cormier will be Henderson's first without the use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT).
Cormier will only have his second fight at 93 kg. In his debut, in February, he beat the unknown Patrick Cummins by technical knockout right at the beginning of the fight. However, the fighter has a successful track record in the heavyweight category, having won the Strikeforce GP and beating names like Antonio Pezão, Frank mir and Josh Barnett.
Dana White also stated that the winner of the fight will be in line for a UFC belt fight. The champion, Jon Jones, will put the title at stake this Saturday (26), against Glover Teixeira, and the winner must face the Swede Alexander Gustafson. Henderson or Cormier would then be next.
The main fight of UFC 173 will be between the Brazilian Renan Barao and the North American TJ Dillashaw, in a fight that will win the UFC bantamweight title.
