At UFC 169, in February, Frank mir he was fighting a very important fight for his career. The former heavyweight champion was going through a delicate moment after suffering three consecutive defeats (to Junior Gypsy, Daniel Cormier and Josh Barnett) and would have, against alistair overeem, another opportunity to get back on the path to victory. The result was not what he expected, and Mir accumulated another setback when he was overtaken by the judges' decision.
After a period of uncertainty regarding the fighter's future, his manager, Malki Kawa, assured, in an interview with the website of the North American broadcaster “FOX Sports”, that Mir is still an employee of the UFC. “We'll know something soon, but there's nothing really happening. But, yes, he is still a UFC employee,” he said.
“He's just taking some time off, a little bit of time in which we'll find out what his next fight is, and what he's going to do next. At this time, we have not yet reached a conclusion regarding a date,” he continued.
Mir, 34 years old, has had an up and down career in the UFC. In 2001, he entered the organization in a devastating way, submitting Brazilian Roberto Traven, world jiu-jitsu and ADCC champion. Mir would win the heavyweight title three years later, also with a submission over the then champion, Tim Sylvia.
However, shortly after winning the belt, Mir suffered a serious motorcycle accident, which left him with a fractured femur. In addition, the fighter was forced to give up his title. His return to fighting would be in 2006, losing to Brazilian Márcio “Pé de Pano” Cruz. Since then, Mir has alternated victories and defeats, with his highlights being the two triumphs over Rodrigo Minotauro, in which the North American became the first to submit and knock out the Brazilian.
